The Lion King

Animation, Family, Kids

One of the biggest blockbuster animation offerings of all time, continuing a run of success that began with the likes of THE LITTLE MERMAID (1989) and ALADDIN (1992).

Simba is a young cub, the heir to the continent of Africa, watched over by current king Mustafa (James Earl Jones). However, brother Scar (Jeremy Irons) is keen to usurp Mustafa and exploits Simba’s curiosity about the ‘circle of life’ and the forbidden lands. Best friend female cub Nala is also keen to be part of the adventure, but Simba leads her into a clearing when hungry hyenas wait.

When Scar causes a stampede which results in Mustafa getting killed, Simba is cast out into the wilderness, where he has to survive with the help of a meerkat and warthog, Timon and Pumbaa)….

Oscar-winning songs by Elton John and a handsome score by Hans Zimmer, as well as first rate animation and atmosphere elevate THE LION KING to a Shakespearean element of majesty. One or two scenes might scare kids, but it is all in the name of good morals.
