The Full Monty

1997

One of the most successful British films of all time alongside FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL, THE FULL MONTY is the tale of five out of work Sheffield locals who are down on their luck and are desperate to sort their lives out.

One of them, Gaz (Robert Carlyle, THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH, TRAINSPOTTING) is trying to see his son but is refused by his wife as he doesn’t contribute child support. Seeing a show by a group of Chippendales, he hits on a plan to get some of his other cronies to strip for money to try and win back the respect of  their loved ones.

The dare takes a hold and auditions are held to find the right balance…

An incredibly uplifting story that doesn’t hold back on the straight-talking honesty that good British Cinema thrives on, it is also incredibly funny and focuses on the physical inadequacies that older males feel, a point that helped the movie endear itself to the US market, as well as nab a few Oscar nominations in the process, although it ultimately lost out to TITANIC in its’ nomination year.
