It is the teen sex comedy that influenced many that came after, be it the AMERICAN PIE movies amongst others and was a low-budget American-Canadian offering that became the talk of many teenage classrooms and home video viewings subsequently, as well as becoming one of the biggest hits in the UK on its’ release in 1982 – thanks in part to a guy called Michael (see the film to understand the joke!!)
Directed by Bob Clark, who directed the horror classic BLACK CHRISTMAS, PORKY’S focuses on the trials and tribulations of a group of teenagers at Angel Beach High School, who have the desire to visit a private rural club called Porky’s (the source of the title). Porky (Chuck Mitchell) is an overbearing owner who doesn’t take too kindly to underage kids coming into his den of sleaze and shows the Angel Beach wannabes what he means when he takes their money.
Meanwhile, back at school, Pee Wee (Don Monahan) is the singled-out idiot who wore one to a date with Wendy Williams (Kaki Hunter). New Jewish student Brian Schwarz (Scott Colomby) is singled out for treatment by the seemingly anti-Semitic student Tim Kavanaugh (Cyril O’Reilly), but Brian has a tough response and Miss Honeywell (Kim Cattrall, who had SEX in school before there was SEX AND THE CITY) has the nickname of ‘Lassie’.
Students take a peek or two in locker-rooms, a local good-time girl called Cherry Forever (Susan Clark) checks out all things below and overall, this is not AMERICAN GRAFFITI (1972).
It’s certainly not the sort of film that would be made today, but it was one of the biggest films of the year back in the day and needs to be taken in the spirit that it was made. Also, it features one of the funniest shower room moments of all time….
