Steven Spielberg threw his hat into the animation ring in collaboration with former Disney animator Don Bluth, who had had some independent non-Disney success with his cult 1982 film THE SECRET OF NIMH with this tale of a Russian mice family, the Mousekowitzes, escaping their homestead and heading to America, but along the way, their youngest Fievel gets separated and goes on an adventure.

With music from the late James Horner and a top ten hit, SOMEWHERE OUT THERE, with vocals by Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram, which was nominated for an Oscar (Horner later won with MY HEART WILL GO ON with co-writer Will Jennings for TITANIC), the film is a celebration of all good things about animation with some terrific and colourful sequences.
