Back To The Future Part II

1989
Family, Kids, Time Travel

Shot simultaneously with PART III (which followed six months after this first sequel in the Summer of 1990), BACK TO THE FUTURE PART II continues exactly where the original 1985 classic ended, with Marty (Michael J. Fox) and Jennifer Parker (Elisabeth Shue replacing original cast member Claudia Wells) accompanying Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) thirty years into the future, where the world is a BLADE RUNNER-esque existence of flying cars. but Marty and Jennifer’s children are an issue, particularly Marty Jr (Fox in multiple roles) who has got in trouble with bullies – and an older Biff Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson) is still causing trouble.

However, when Marty buys a sports almanac with all the results of the last thirty years, he sees a way to make money, but Biff is listening and watching – and steals the DeLorean time machine to go back sixty years to give his younger self the almanac – and change history….

Not that BACK TO THE FUTURE ever needed a sequel, as it was near perfect and sequel-proof, but this is passable, with some good moments of humour, although it does play out against re-runs of the original film.

Good visual effects and neat in-jokes (the JAWS reference is one stand-out) help elevate this to be an entertaining follow-on, although the third part is a better prospect.
