Directors Anthony and Joe Russo, alongside producer Angela Russo-Otstot, delighted fans in the audience by inviting Millie Bobby Brown and Stanley Tucci to join them on-stage to take part in an exclusive Q&A, hosted by broadcaster Edith Bowman.

Set in the aftermath of a robot uprising in an alternate version of the ’90s, THE ELECTRIC STATE follows an orphaned teenager who ventures across the American West with a cartoon-inspired robot, a smuggler, and his sidekick in search of her younger brother.

The on-stage conversation included the inspiration and making of the film, the influence of technology on our daily lives, and the ensemble cast, including Chris Pratt

Joe Russo on the themes of the film: “The thing that was most impactful to us were the themes about the abuse of technology and about our complicated relationship with technology. We all felt like the most impacted generation was Gen Z so we wanted to make sure that Gen Z and youngers saw this movie, which is why we took a broader lens to the material to invite that audience to the film.

Angela Russo-Otstot hails the film’s motion capture process “We’ve made a film that’s equal parts live action and a version of animation, and I think it’s quite a feat… the number of technicians and artisans that needed to come together to pull that off so it felt very seamless and authentic was quite astounding, and we’re really proud of it.”

Millie Bobby Brown on her character Michelle: “I’ve never played a character like Michelle before which I was very excited about. I think that everyone has experienced grief and that loss comes in so many different ways, I really wanted to translate that on-screen and make it feel dynamic and different. I wanted to make something that felt more powerful, more meaningful and show some depth.”

Millie Bobby Brown on working with Chris Pratt, “He’s alright… No, I love that man. To finally get to the scenes with him and to never not laugh, seriously that man is a walking comedy skit.”

Stanley Tucci on his character tech billionaire Ethan Slate, “He believes in what he’s doing, that was the attraction to me as well as those guys [Anthony and Joe Russo]. The attraction is that here is a guy who completely believes what he is saying and what he is doing. He’s a narcissist and egotist and when things don’t go his way he is completely confounded. That kinda stuff I love because he’s a villain but he doesn’t know it.”

Millie Bobby Brown on having her own brother on-set during filming, “My brother worked on the film, he was a BTS camera operator and I just kept looking over at him, thinking about my character’s relationship with their brother. Then the reality of that hit which was able to make the performance feel more connected and real.”

Joe Russo on meeting Millie Bobby Brown on the set of Stranger Things, “We started chatting with Millie and her father on set, now we’re all family friends and have known each other for years. So this was an amazing opportunity for us to get to work with her. We wrote the part for her, so thank god she said yes, not sure what we would have done if she said no. It’s been amazing to watch her grow and turn into one of the biggest stars in the world.

Anthony Russo on working with ensemble casts,“One characteristic of almost all the work that Joe and I have done is that we love ensemble storytelling. We often credit that to growing up in having grown up in a large extended Italian-American family. We really value multiple points of view and the cacophony of different characters, so a lot of our storytelling involves large casts. Part of our process is to think about the entire movie from every single point of view.”

About THE ELECTRIC STATE:

Set in the aftermath of a robot uprising in an alternate version of the ’90s, THE ELECTRIC STATEfollows an orphaned teenager who ventures across the American West with a cartoon-inspired robot, a smuggler, and his sidekick in search of her younger brother.

THE ELECTRIC STATE is a spectacular adventure from the directors of Avengers: Endgame set in an alternate, retro-futuristic version of the 1990s. Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger ThingsEnola HolmesDamsel) stars as Michelle, an orphaned teenager navigating life in a society where sentient robots resembling cartoons and mascots, who once served peacefully among humans, now live in exile following a failed uprising. Everything Michelle thinks she knows about the world is upended one night when she’s visited by Cosmo, a sweet, mysterious robot who appears to be controlled by Christopher — Michelle’s genius younger brother whom she thought was dead. Determined to find the beloved sibling she thought she had lost, Michelle sets out across the American southwest with Cosmo, and soon finds herself reluctantly joining forces with Keats (Chris Pratt, Guardians of the GalaxyJurassic World), a low-rent smuggler, and his wisecracking robot sidekick, Herman (voiced by Anthony Mackie). As they venture into the Exclusion Zone, a walled-off corner in the desert where robots now exist on their own, Keats and Michelle find a strange, colourful group of new animatronic allies — and begin to learn that the forces behind Christopher’s disappearance are more sinister than they ever expected.

THE ELECTRIC STATE is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and stars Brown, Pratt, Academy Award winner Ke Huy Quan, Jason Alexander, Giancarlo Esposito, Academy Award nominee Stanley Tucci, and Woody Norman. Mackie, Woody Harrelson, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, and Alan Tudyk lend their talents as the voices of the robots.
