Clark Kent (Christopher Reeve) returns to Smallville for his high school reunion, where he rekindles his romance with college sweetheart Lana Lang (Annette O’Toole), now a single mother of one.
Meanwhile ne-er-do-well Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor) has discovered a talent for computer genius, which he uses to exploit his employer Ross Webster (Robert Vaughn), determined to monopolise the world’s coffee crops using a deadly satellite Gorman hacks into.
Gorman retrieves a piece of Kryptonite, but changes an unknown element to cigarette tar and when he attempts to present it to Superman at a ceremony for heroism, it seems to have no effect. However, Superman is developing a split personality which is darkening his soul.
Whilst not as good as the previous two movies, SUPERMAN III does have an intriguing subplot of Superman developing a split personality.
Margot Kidder returned, but was relegated to a minor role (partly perhaps due to a very public criticism of the producers over the dismissal of Richard Donner from the SUPERMAN films). However, there are some occasion fun moments. .
