Michael Curtiz’ Technicolor-marvellous version of the classic outlaw tale was one of Warner Bros’ best loved films. Set in Nottingham, but shot in the California woodlands, Errol Flynn claimed the all-time great title of swashbuckler of the century as Robin of Locksley as he did battle with Sir Guy of Gisborne (Basil Rathbone) and the tyrannical Prince John (Claude Rains). Right from the outset, the stakes are high for all of England – and for Robin, the chance to win the hand of the Lady Marian (Olivia De Havilland) as well as his country’s freedom through his desire to rob from the rich and give to the poor.
