LIFF 2026 REVIEW: BLOCKHEAD

2026
4 Stars

How far does one go into their soul as a writer when creating that definitive literary sensation? Such is the dilemma facing troubled Will in Matt Harlock‘s psychological horror BLOCKHEAD.

Will (Danny Horn) is a talented but perhaps traumatised soul. One good book published and in the realm of passable existence, helped by his loyal girlfriend Daisy (Hussina Raja) and a supportive publisher in Maggie (Michele Moran). However, the second book stigma is hitting him hard and he needs all the support he can get.

To aid his creative objectives, Maggie offers him an apartment where he can focus on his work and get the job done.

However, he has reckoned without painter and decorator Mikey (Joe Sims), a charismatic if overbearing individual who senses Will’s desire to get more out. Maggie has encouraged Will to go deeper and take more risks with his writing. However, as he soon discovers, the line between risk and positive fulfilment begins to blur in more extreme ways….

The plight of writers impacted by a focus blighted by past trauma and mental issues has defined  many previous classics on screen such as BARTON FINK, MISERY, SALEM’S LOT and THE SHINING.

On one level, BLOCKHEAD does tend to tread a familiar path. In these types of narratives, if you are savvy about the genre, you get a sense that something is not quite right with our main protagonist and visually you know that things are slightly off, which is the whole essence of psychological drama and horror.

However, Harlock plays off expectations to deliver one or two genuine (and quite graphic) shocks in the final third of the film that will deliver.

Great all-round performances from the cast heighten a very competent indie that is atmospheric and stylish. Harlock continues to impress and remains a sterling talent in the indie sector. Film has potential to evolve on the festival and streaming circuit if given the chance and forum.

BLOCKHEAD plays on Saturday 18th April 2026 as part of the London Independent Film Festival 2026, which runs between 10th and 19th April 2026.
