“It’s hard to beat a good road movie. Featuring a comically malignant Tara Lynne O’Neill, The Spin is definitely worth thumbing down for some whimsical, light-hearted fun.”

The stars have aligned for The Spin, a new award-winning comedy film. This heartwarming, music-themed road trip, which has already garnered significant recognition, recently won Best Irish Feature Film at the Dublin International Comedy Film Festival 2024 and will be screening at the Chicago Irish Film Festival in 2025.  The film features a cast of big names alongside musical luminaries.

Watch the trailer here:

The Spin centres around Elvis (Owen Colgan) and Dermot (Brenock O’Connor), who own a small record shop in the village of Omagh. Threatened with eviction by their scheming landlord, Sadie (Tara Lynne O’Neill), they head out on a last-resort road trip adventure to Cork to retrieve a priceless record that could answer their prayers and save their shop.  It all seems like a good craic – if only it would go to plan.

The film also stars Leah O’Rourke (Derry Girls), Amy McElhatton (Kathleen is Here), and Joe Savino (Bally Kiss Angel), alongside Kimberly Wyatt from the Grammy-nominated girl group The Pussycat Dolls and the acting debut of TV presenter, model, and social media star Maura Higgins, who plays Dermot’s girlfriend, Rose.

Set against the backdrop of the beautiful Irish landscape, the story is a celebration of warmth, gentle humour, friendship, and self-discovery. As Dermot struggles with a music career gone awry, Elvis faces a difficult divorce. During their road trip in a borrowed car that’s older than the hills, the friends encounter a nun, a stripper, a stuffed fox, and an angry chicken, ultimately putting their bromance to the test and proving that true friendship is hard to find.

The film features an eclectic slew of musical cameos, including Barry Devlin of Horslips and the legendary Steve Wickham of The Waterboys.

The Spin is Directed by award-winning director and screenwriter Michael Head (Bermondsey Tales: Fall of the Roman Empire, The Last Heist) and is written by Colin Broderick (A Bend In The River, Emerald City), Producers are Ismail Ismail and Jake Jacovides (post-production). The film was shot by award-winning Director of Photography Sebastian Cort (Blur: To The End), and the Editor is Aideen Johnston (nominee for the Chris Crookall Award for Breakthrough Editor at the BFE Cut Above Awards, 2023).

Michael Head, Director, said: “The Spin is indeed a charming tale of friendship, but more than this, the film is a celebration of Ireland, its people, its culture, and the craic. It’s a film that hopes to spread joy and positivity in a way that only true friendship can.”

The Spin is based on an original short story by songwriter & musician Mark McCausland, who also composed the film’s original soundtrack.
